In 2005, working through a UK-based charity
called ITDG which specialises in working with disabled
people the Warborough & Shillingford Festival has
decided to 'adopt' a small community in Batticaloa in the
Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.
Out of the twelve areas affected by the
Tsunami it is one of the worst hit.
The 'adoption' of Batticaloa is a major
commitment by the Warborough & Shillingford Festival.
We have underwritten that we will raise £20,000 to fund
an entire project of activity over the next year. ITDG in
Sri Lanka has confirmed that the funds raised will go directly
to Batticaloa, and we in turn will see how this money is directly
helping actual women, men and children through Case Studies,
photographs and reports prepared for us three times per year.
The particular community in Batticaloa
we are helping is Manmunaipattu and the preliminary research
has found that there are 323 people with disabilities
and around 50% of them have been directly affected by the
Tsunami.
We believe that not only will this undertaking
massively help Batticaloa, it will add something to the well-being
of our community. Our objective is not to change the nature
of the Warborough & Shillingford Festival nor in
any way pressure people to contribute or be involved: equally,
however, we need support and help, so anything you can do
to help will be invaluable.
