Music on the Green: 2010 lineup

Sunday afternoon 18th July 2010

The Sunday afternoon of the Festival has always been a chilled-out event. Sit and listen to fantastic live music from superb solo performers and bands whilst enjoying a cold beer and something from the pig roast; or bring along a picnic!

As well as the pig roast, there will be an ice-cream stall and fully licensed bar and cocktails available all afternoon, as well as a children's attractions.

This year we are making maximum use of our new, bigger, round Bar Tent to provide an additional small stage for solo or duo acts that will provide live music in the bar and on the main PA during longer mainstage re-sets. This tent will also have an area for band merchandising so you can purchase CDs, Tee-shirts and other band goodies.

In the event of rain, all musical performances will still take place on the main covered stage (or on the Bar Tent stage where noted) and the Big Top will provide a massive covered audience and picnic area.

The Mighty Redox

Known variously as Oxford's leading swamp rock band, and more recently under the self-invented category 'psycho eclectic rock', Redox are a very welcome fixture on the Oxford music scene.

Two of the band originally came from Reading and two from Oxford. From those two locations, the name and the band The Mighty Redox was formed. All 4 members now reside in Oxfordshire. Playing all original material of a "swamp rock" genre, they give bands like "Talking Heads" a run for their money. Veterans of the Festival Circuit they are consumate professional rockers and the Ultimate Party Band!! Current line up Sue Smith-vocals and percussion ,Phil Freizinger, Guitar and flute and a cracking Rhythm section of Gray Barlow Bass and Nick Thelonious Clack Drums.

Not only excellent musicians in their own right, Phil and Sue are organisers of Klub Kakofanney, a top venue for promoting rising rock talent in the Oxford area.

Redox’s most endearing feature is their unselfconscious retro vibe and shameless pillaging of every style and period of music to suit their holistic view – from Canned Heat to Ozric Tentacles via a Jamaican beach party.

Jus' Chillin' Reggae
Scheduled on stage: Saturday pm
Jus Chillin

Jus Chillin's member lineup has changed a lot since it started about 10 years ago. Renowned in the Buckinghamshire area for its Reggae and Soca music, including classic Reggae Covers from the likes of Bob Marley and UB40, it is now led by Seychelles born Gary Denis and Jack Domingue and comprises: Gary Denis: Lead Guitar, Keyboard and Vocals; Michael Barra: Drums; Jack Domingue: Bass; Pierre Labiche: Keyboard; Laura Cook: Lead vocals.

All members are self-taught musicians and have a natural talent to pick up any instrument and play it. Gary now plays the keyboard in addition to the guitar during gigs and other members sometimes switch instruments during a gig!

Michael is a passionate, energetic and talented drummer and has added a new dimension to the band with his love of Rock and Indie Music adding a twist to the Reggae and Soca the band was renound for. He has been drumming from a very early age and been involved with other bands and recording artists in the past.

With Jack on Bass, Pierre Labiche, originally a DJ and bass player, took on the keyboard and is very committed to ensuring an individual sound is created.

Laura, the lead singer in the band and the only member who comes from the UK (whereas the rest of them were born and bred in the Seychelles) joined the band following a Jus Chillin gig where she sang and was asked to join as a permanent member. She adds a diversity to the band and allows for a wider selecton of song choices.

The current mix of the band means that the covers they do are presented in unique arrangements and completely different to how you would normally expect to hear a well-known song – so listen up and enjoy!.

Kiria Pop Punk
Scheduled on stage: 3.55pm
Kiria live

Kiria muses that she is almost definitely the Lovechild of Marilyn Munroe and Ziggy Stardust who fell upon each other in a New York alley under full moon... "and along I came, only to be taken away in a spaceship which unfortunately crashlanded in Kentish Town! Music for me," she says, "comes from within and in the mainstream it’s mostly manufactured, it’s not art. It has become bland, formulaic and has lost the ability to fire our imaginations – and without stimulous imagination stutters and dies. We are living in a sea of 'reality' television shows and wallpaer music – which is not relevant to my existence. I make Music for the Love of it. Life is short – break some rules!"

Shock Contender Funk
Scheduled on stage: 4.50pm
Shock Contender

Shock Contender consists of Lee Tavender on Bass and vocals, Chris Reynolds on Guitar and Alex Humphries on Drums. The 'Funk Covers' really comprise various hits from the 70's to today, but 'covers that sound funky' may be more accurate. The band also plays lots of modern Indie/Rock tracks, but have a style (in the mould of 'Stevie Wonder, Level 42, Jamiroquai') and do sound very different from other bands covering the genre of Indie/Rock.

Shock Contender has been described as a 'great rock/funk band', which probably in the most basic terms explains what they're about!

Sunday's set might comprise such hits as Long Train Running (The Doobie Brothers); Roxanne (The Police); Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry); Blame It On The Boogie (The Jacksons); Mr Brightside (The Killers); Baggy Trousers (Madness); as well as some original tracks thrown in for good measure!

Kastaphor Modern Folk
Scheduled on stage: 5.40pm
Kastaphor

Kastaphor are a four-piece band, comprising Emma Bentley (vocals), Rob Taylor (guitars), Gerard Walters (bass) and Karl Greenow (drums). Rob, Ged and Karl had been together since 2007 working with various singers and as an instrumental outfit. In August 2009 Emma, in that great tradition of band formations, answered an advert, auditioned and so the band was born.

Writing the songs for the debut album, Times Have Changed, was a breeze compared to the anguish of choosing a band name. After several abortive attempts (the album artwork features many of them!), it was Emma’s grandfather, Ken, who came up with Kastaphor, both a play on "cast of four" and a hint at themes exotic and mysterious. The album was recorded at Shonk Studios in Oxford between September and December 2009 – a set of songs that reflects the diverse musical backgrounds of the individual band members; a taste of danceable grooves, dub, blues, soulful ballads and more than a hint of rock anthemics.

The band are looking forward to a summer of playing live, providing both the sounds to relax and sip a rum punch to and then to persuade outbreaks of sunshine-fuelled grooving.

Country For Old Men Country/Blues/Cajun
Scheduled on stage: 6.30pm

Des says, "I've played Warborough for many years under different guises – like a chameleon, I change! It's the change that keeps me going and writing new songs for this year's band has set a new spark I hope willlast and ignite! Reflecting my time spent in Texas and my love for Country music new and old; and I'm enjoying playing with three of the finest musicians!."

Country For Old Men is:

  • Des Barkus: guitar & vocals
  • Henry Smith: Upright Bass
  • Danjo the Banjo; you can guess
  • Nick Clack: Drums

Henry Smith is a brilliant bassist and has played with Stuart Copeland, Peter Gabriel and Hosan Ramsay.

Before Taking up the banjo, Dan Branegan – aka Danjo the Banjo – played rythm guitar in funk bands including the High Rollers from Calgary, Canada and London outfit Puppy Phat. He's adapted his own style of frailing / clawhammer banjo.

Nick Clack is very experienced and has gigged all around the world. He currently plays with The Mighty Redox and the Pete Fryer Band who both tour extensively. Nick has played lots of major festivals including Sidmouth (Folk); Brecon (Jazz); and Guilfest (Rock).

All timings are approximate and subject to change on the day!

In the event of rain, all musical performances will still take place on the main covered stage and the Big Top will provide a massive covered audience area.
